Charity home gets an uplift

GIBRALTAR BSN Life Bhd (Gibraltar BSN) recently launched its first Global Volunteer Day at Rumah Juara, a non-profit home in Selangor which provides shelter to 37 underprivileged children aged between 3 and 17.

The home has two separate sections for underprivileged boys and girls who come from broken families and suffered neglect.

Gibraltar BSN chief executive officer Vincent Kwo said: “We are committed to add value to the community and that is why we set aside a day where our staff can volunteer to help make a difference in the lives of those in need. I hope that today’s event will spread some cheer to the children and help them realise that they are special.”

He added that the event, which was participated by 30 Gibraltar BSN employees, would also help strengthen solidarity among themselves as well as learning to give back to the society. The staff members also took time to help paint the walls of the home and sponsored new mattresses, bed sheets, bath towels, curtains and shoe racks.

The kids were later treated to a tea party with a variety of food items such as fried ice-cream, spaghetti bolognese, deep-fried chicken wings, spring rolls, fried rice and noodles.

Gibraltar BSN chief marketing officer Koh Wei Lee said: “There is a tendency for today’s kids to feel lost and neglected. We want them to see that there are people who still care for them.”

Meanwhile, Rumah Juara supervisor Elizabeth Billy Ratnam praised Gibraltar BSN for its kind gesture to the needy children.

She also thanked the organisation for getting new furniture for the home’s study area.

“Many of the children used to fall off their chairs while doing their homework. Now, they can study comfortably,” she said.

Gibraltar BSN staff also helped to raise funds for the children’s education through a charity sale of its corporate merchandise.
