Car engine catches fire

JOHOR BARU: Traffic was reduced to a crawl on Monday in Jalan Wong Ah Fook, near the City Square Shopping Centre, after a car caught fire.

In the 10am incident, the driver scrambled out of his car when he noticed the engine was on fire.

Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohamad Nazaruddin Ahmad Zainuddin said a fire engine was despatched to the scene after the distress call was made.

It took the firefighters about eight minutes to arrive and they managed to control the fire from spreading within two minutes.

The operation to clear the obstruction and allow for smooth flow of traffic took about 10 minutes.

There were no injuries reported and investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire and estimated losses.

Nazaruddin said there was a rise in the number of vehicles catching fire. He urged motorists to service their vehicles regularly and to not modify their vehicles outside of specifications. By Jassmine Shadiqe
