Another anxious wait

WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei left Norway yesterday after his ‘B’ urine sample was tested for a banned substance in a lab at University of Oslo.

Chong Wei and National Sports Institute chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz was present when the three-time All England’s urine sample was opened.

The lab will convey the test result to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) soon before the international body sets up a hearing panel to deliberate if it is positive. BWF will also notify the BA of Malaysia (BAM).

Chong Wei allegedly tested positive for the banned substance dexamethasone after his semi-final win over Denmark’s Victor Axelsen in the World Championships on Aug 30.

If the 32-year-old is found guilty, Chong Wei will face a two-year suspension but may escape with a warning or a six-month suspension if he can prove that he had taken it unintentionally.

Dr Ramlan said the documents pertaining to the ‘B’ sample were in order before he and Chong Wei were given a thorough briefing on the ‘A’ sample result.

“After that, we were brought into the lab, where the athlete examined the bottle and also the enclosed documents before we witnessed the opening of the bottle using a machine,” said Dr Ramlan yesterday.

“The shuttler went through the processes accordingly. We did not witness the actual analysis. The result will be certified by two scientists before it is registered with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) ADAM system and the BWF will also be informed.”

Dr Ramlan said BWF will set up a hearing panel after the testing of the ‘B’ sample.

“They will analyse whether there has been an ‘anti-doping rule violation’. As for now the status is ‘adverse’ analytical finding.”

The entire process could take between three and seven days according to “Buletin Utama” on TV3.
