KUALA TERENGGANU: Out of the frying pan into the fire, it is the current situation of the three youths who were injured following an explosion at Kampung Padang Macang in Manir on Saturday.

Investigation revealed that they had lied to the police and are now being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosive Act 1957 for possession of explosive substances which may land them in jail.

The youths had told the police in their initial investigation that they were injured after a box exploded but further investigations showed that they were experimenting on making a rocket and had filled an iron pipe with sulphur powder.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Idris Abd Rafar said one of the victim, Nazrin Che Mohammad, 20, had told the police that they wanted to build a rocket after successfully testing a 'water rocket' powered by water.

Initial investigation showed that the explosion occurred about 25 metres away from the house and not in the house as the victims had claimed.

Abd Rafar said the trio, students of Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) in Gong Badak, here, will be remanded soon after being discharged from the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ ).

On Saturday, the three youths were injured, one seriously, after they claimed that a box suddenly exploded while they were cleaning a house at Kampung Padang Macang in Manir, near here.

Khairul Shahrizan Che Ibrahim, 19, lost his fingers while two others suffered light injuries. One of the injured youths, Nazrin Che Mohamad, 20, had told police that Khairul Shahrizan was removing a box when it suddenly exploded.

All three victims, including 18-year-old Mohd Afiq Mohd Misran, are still being warded at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.
