Sungai Berang now a fish sanctuary

HULU TERENGGANU: Sungai Berang in Kuala Berang is now turned into a Fish Sanctuary and will be gazetted as an area that bans fishing to ensure the survival of the fish in the river.

Hulu Terengganu Fisheries District Head Jamlus Mohd Nor said the gazetting of the river encompassed a two-kilometre stretch of the river from Kuala Sungai Berang up to the estuary of Kuala Sungai Tersat.

"We will not allow any individual to fish in the gazetted area and in this regard, we have also sought the cooperation of several agencies such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), Hulu Terengganu District Council and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

"We will provide the technical inputs while the JKKK will look after the fish, ensure that the fish are not caught and future yield from the fish would be handed over the JKKK," he told reporters when met after a programme to release fish fry in the Sungai Berang, here yesterday.

Sungai Berang becomes the fourth fish sanctuary in the state after Sungai Petang (Kenyir), Sungai Loh (Dungun) and Sungai Perlong (Setiu). --BERNAMA
