UPDATED: Several areas in Kuantan hit by floods

KUANTAN: A family of six in Kampung Baru Cherating here was evacuated after their home was affected by flood today.

State police operations centre spokesman said the family was sent to the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherating about 4pm.

Continued rains from Monday night have also caused flash floods in several areas here.

Among the worst hit areas were the intersection under the Kuantan-Kuantan Port bypass road in Indera Mahkota and Jalan Kuantan-Penor stretch near Sungai Soi, where the water rose up 0.8 metre in the afternoon.

Several cars were stalled in the area while other road users were forced to make a U-turn and took an alternative routes.

State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Morni Mamat said the situation was under control in the town area, Cherating and Sungai Lembing although heavy rainfall of more than 60 milimetres were recorded at several spots since Monday night.

"Only the area near the bypass road was badly affected due to poor drainage system. However, it was not as bad as being spread through the social media," he told reporters after inspecting the affected areas here yesterday.

Morni also advised the public not to create panic by distributing photos of flooding in other areas or those which occurred here last year.

“Such an irresponsible act will also make family members, who are living elsewhere, worry about the safety of their loved ones in Kuantan. Please stop spreading such photos and the public must always refer to reliable sources, including the flood operations centre and the relevant agencies," he said.

He also said that there were occasions when his men had to check the so-called flooded areas after the photos were uploaded in the social media by irresponsible people.
