Council comes down hard on assessment defaulters

BATU GAJAH: Despite numerous reminders to pay up his assessment arrears, a scrap metal dealer chose to ignore the notices from the Batu Gajah District Council.

As a result, an enforcement team visited his scrap yard at Tanjung Tualang here in a bid to seal it.

The owner of the premises tried to negotiate with the council for two hours but was unsuccessful.

Council secretary Shahiri Tan said the dealer owed the council RM60,000.

“This is our eighth operation this year to recover assessment arrears. We began sending out reminders from Jan 16.”

He said the council would not compromise with those who refused to pay their assessment.

“This is not a seasonal operation. We will continue this exercise until every last sen in arrears is paid up.”

The council sent Notice E to owners of premises before following up with the final notice or issuing Warrant F, an order to seal the premises.

Shahiri said the council’s next targets are house owners in the Batu Gajah and Simpang Pulai area.

“A total of 115 Notice Es have been issued for both areas,” he said. By Sylvia Looi
