Mahali fearful of opener

POOR starts in the previous two AFF Cup editions do not provide confidence for the national team ahead of today’s opening Group B match against Myanmar at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium.

In 2010, Malaysia were thrashed 5-1 by Indonesia in Jakarta before bouncing back to lift the title for the first time. In 2012, the team were humbled 3-0 by Singapore in Bukit Jalil.

Right-back Mahali Jasuli, who was part of the team in 2010 and 2012, said Malaysia cannot afford a poor start in Singapore as they are in a tough group.

“We had lost to strong teams in 2010 and 2012 but this time, we are playing Myanmar who do not have a good record in the tournament. I hope history will not repeat for a third time,” said Mahali yesterday.

“Frankly, it will be very tough for us to advance to the semi-finals if we lose the opening game this time. We need a win to raise our confidence before facing Thailand and defending champions Singapore.”

Mahali, however, is confident the team will bounce back in the tournament from their poor form in friendly matches.

“Players are still adapting with coach Dollah (Salleh's) tactics in the friendlies. The scenario is different now as everyone has adapted to his style of play. We will win when it matters and it will be a mistake if other teams take us lightly,” said Mahali.

Mahali was part of the Malaysian squads who won the 2009 and 2011 Sea Games and the 2010 AFF Cup.

“I played right wing several times for Darul Ta'zim this season and I am pretty good. Yes, I need to be careful and remain in position when the opponents are attacking,” added Mahali.
