Asyura porridge for Naka folk

PADANG TERAP: More than 500 employees of government agencies and non-governmental organisations joined hands to cook “bubur asyura” for the people of Naka here recently.

The porridge, made using ingredients like corn, nuts, fried and grated coconut, sugar and spices, were cooked in 50 cauldrons by the volunteers.

They started preparing the dish as early as 8am at Dataran Naka here.

The 1Malaysia Perdana Asyura Programme was jointly organised by the state Information Department and Padang Terap and Pedu district offices.

The other agencies that took part in the programme were the district Health Office and district Wildlife Department.

Pedu assemblyman Kama Noriah Ibrahim, who also took part in the programme, said the event would help foster close relations between the government agencies and the community.

Kama Noriah said the feast was to mark the beginning of Muharam, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

“Muharram is a special month for Muslims, who fast and doing good deeds,” she said, adding that such an event should be held annually. By Zahratulhayat Mat Arif
