UPDATE: Umno must focus on rejuvenation: Hisham

KUALA LUMPUR: Attracting the younger generation (Gen-Y) must be part of the strategic plan to rejuvenate Umno said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

This is to ensure that the party’s rejuvenation will not merely revolve around age and positions.

"As the vice-president, I agree that the rejuvenation agenda must be turned into the main agenda of the party," he said when winding up the debate at the Umno General Assembly 2014 here today.

Hishammuddin said the nation’s peace and security must also be given attention, as it was the key towards becoming a high-income nation.

“Economic stability cannot be achieved without peace. The peace we have enjoyed will not have been achieved without the sacrifice of our men who put their lives at risks to protect our beloved country,” said Hishammuddin who is also the Defence Minister.

In giving recognition to troops who safeguarded the nation, he said a RM100 million allocation had been approved to refurbish the homes of armed forces men.

He said to enhance their education a welfare fund for the benefit of armed forces personnel will be established.

“In a larger scale, the effort to strengthen the nation’s security and defence sector, a strategic plan will be outlined in the 11th Malaysia Plan.

“It is timely to boost our security system as we are now facing new threats. This calls for a more sophisticated assets and equipment,” he said.
