Closing the widening economic gap

KUALA LUMPUR: Addressing the widening of wealth inequality between the rich and poor will be the main priority for Umno in its effort to improve the Malaysian economy.

Umno treasurer, Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah urged party leaders to pay more attention to the plight of the rakyat’s economy and make it the main agenda for the party.

“Our economic performance has continued to improve from year to year, our growth projection increased from 5.4 per cent to 5.7 per cent and soon with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the government is expected to earn more than before. But all of these developments are no use if the rakyat do not get to benefit from them, he said in his Winding-Up speech, today.

“We are set to become a developed nation by 2020 and the main reason for our relentless efforts in improving the economy is for the Rakyat’s benefit but we are still faced with a widening gap of wealth inequality among them.

“That’s why it is pertinent for the leaders from Umno to take heed of this issue and make the effort to uplift the people’s livelihood as our main agenda. The government, through our agencies has reached out to help raise the income of those in the rural area by increasing developments on their industries such as food production,” he said.
