ATM technician gets one week in jail for stealing from ATM

KUALA LUMPUR: A former automated teller machine (ATM) technician was sentenced to a weeks' jail and fined RM20,000 for stealing RM80,850 from an ATM inside the National Registration Department (NRD) headquarters in March.

Judge Norsharidah Awang sentenced Hamdan Abu Husin, 27, after he changed his plea to guilty to a reduced charge today.

On March 25, Hamdan was charged with committing the offence at reception hall of the JPN building at Precinct 2, Putrajaya, around 3.20pm on March 7.

He was arrested four days later.

According to the case facts, on the day of the incident, the Safeguards Corporation Bhd was informed that about RM80,000 cash from the Maybank ATM at NRD, Putrajaya was missing.

Following an inspection by the security management the following day, the machine's security door was found opened without a key.

The management also found that the machine's extra bar was broken and there were scratches on the security door.

"After considering that you are a first offender, I also have to consider the public interest," Norsharidah said.

She then ordered for the jail term to begin from the day of sentencing from today and ordered for Hamdan to serve six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad prosecuted.
