RM3million aid for Ebola-hit nations: Health ministry

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is sending additional aid worth RM3 million to assist Ebola-stricken nations, said Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam today.

He said the Cabinet had agreed that the Health Ministry would provide the additional aid and the ministry would work with the Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) to identify areas best needed for the additional assistance and how best to utilise it.

Mercy Malaysia already has international collaborations and has been working at the international front for a long time

"The aid can be in the form of medical supplies such as hospital beds, containment suits and even gloves.

"Malaysia has given some 20.9million pairs of gloves to five Ebola-stricken nations before," he told reporters.

In the recent Asean Plus Three Health Ministers' special meeting on Ebola in Bangkok, he said, the conclusions were to strengthen national capacity and increase regional cooperation framework.

"We are willing to share our expertise and resources with other countries in the region."

The World Health Organisation has reported there were 17,908 Ebola confirmed cases as of Dec 7 including 6,373 fatalities in three countries-- Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
