Malls help equip children for school

KUALA LUMPUR Two groups of underprivileged children had fun shopping for school necessities at Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall, here, recently.

Back for the fourth year, ‘My Schoolbag’ is an annual programme initiated by CapitaMalls Asia Limited( and CapitaMalls Malaysia REIT Management funded by CapitaLand Hope Foundation.

CapitaMalls Malaysia REIT Management chief executive officer Low Peck Chen said the programme served to give underprivileged children a head start in getting ready for a new school year.

The children were each given a RM250 voucher each to shop for school uniforms, socks and shoes.

They were also given a school bag containing stationery.

Forty employees of Queensbay Mall spent a happy morning helping the children to shop at AEON department store.

The children also received goodies sponsored by AEON and were treated to lunch and a magic show.

The children at Queensbay Mall were from Seri Cahaya Welfare Home, Pertubuhan Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya, Penang Shan Children’s Home (Prai), Penang Shan Children’s Home (Penang island) and Sinaran Kasih.

At Gurney Plaza, children from Ru Yi Home, Kamakshi Children Home, Pertubuhan Penyayang Chi Yun, Rumah Anak Kesayangan and Ramakrishna Ashrama were entertained by a musical show of a fairy tale.

The mall staff enjoyed a meal with them and later helped them to shop for school essentials at Parkson Grand department store. By Jennifer Tham
