Pair craving for GP success

GOH V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong are raring to end the year with a bang by winning the National GP Finals in Terengganu on Dec 27-30.

The duo, who were only paired in May for the Thomas Cup Finals, are now Malaysia’s No 1 and they are only looking forward to improve as the new year approaches.

Wee Kiong, who was recently named the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) Coca-Cola Male Olympian of the year, said it has been a tiring year for the pair but that has not dampened their spirits.

“There were just too many tournaments this year, but we played our hearts out regardless.

“V Shem suffered a back injury and was ruled out for a while and I have also been struggling with a leg problem.

“We will, however, go to Terengganu next week and play to win. That is our target,” Wee Kiong said yesterday.

Apart from helping the national team reach the Thomas Cup final in New Delhi, V Shem-Wee Kiong also bagged the men’s doubles gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July. They also played a key role in helping Malaysia retain the mixed team gold medal.

On their future plans, Wee Kiong added: “We are still a new pair and we need to move up the world rankings if we are to qualify for the major events.

“The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is our main target and we will do our best to reach the highest ranking possible.”
