Sister in-law ordered to pay over Facebook postings

KUALA LUMPUR: A former personal assistant to a novelist would have to pay her former employer RM50,000 in damages over defamatory Facebook postings.

High Court’s Judicial commissioner, Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera dismissed Asmaliyana Ahmad's application to set aside a verdict ordering her to pay the compensation as well as RM10,000 in cost to Siti Rosmizah Semail.

The same court on Oct 21 had ordered Asmaliyana, 24, to pay the damages and the cost to 42-year-old Siti Rosmizah, who is also her sister-in-law.

Siti Rosmizah sued Asmaliyana on Dec 18 last year over nine statements posted on the defendant's Facebook between April 21 and July 24 the same year.

The plaintiff, who is a practising lawyer and recipient of the "Pilihan Pembaca Popular Berita Harian 2009", claimed that the statements jeopardised her reputation as director of a firm that publishes novels as well as in the legal and literary world.

She claimed to have lost her income because she no longer received invitations to give novel-writing talks.

Siti Rosmizah had sought RM1.5 million in general damages, RM1.5 million in aggravated damages, and interest, cost as well as any other relief deemed fit by the court.
