46 rural health clinics affected

TUMPAT: The floods in Kelantan have affected services at 46 health and rural clinics in eight districts, besides disrupting the lives of hundreds of healthcare staff.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the clinics were in Gua Musang, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Pasir Putih, Tanah Merah and Tumpat.

“Until Sunday, 12 clinics have been flooded but the number dropped to seven today (yesterday). We have received news that a clinic in Kampung Keroh in Kuala Krai was damaged.

“However, assessment on the damages to properties and clinical equipment can only be made after the situation returns to normal,” he said after launching the state-level diabetics day in Pengkalan Kubor yesterday, adding that district health officers had been told to prepare reports on the matter.

Dr Hilmi said the homes of 65 staff were inundated and 32 of the families had to be evacuated.

“About 473 staff were unable to go to work as the roads were flooded.”

He said the state health department had set up 83 teams to conduct health checks and provide treatments to flood victims, as well as 76 teams to conduct disease control at evacuation centres.

A 24-hour static team had been operating at four shelters in Pasir Mas and Tumpat.
