300 villagers take part in health event

JOHOR BARU: SOME 300 Kampung Sungai Danga (KSD) residents participated in a one-day health programme called Komuniti Sihat Perkasa Negara recently.

The event was organised by KSD village development and security committee (JKKK), Pulai community development department (Kemas) and Klinik Kesihatan Mahmoodiah (KKM).

The activities included an aerobics exercise, 10,000-step walk, health screenings, talks on healthy lifestyle, cooking demonstration and drawing competition.

Present were Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed’s representative Tengku Salman Fathi Tengku Jaafar, KKM administrative medical officer Dr Manoharan RPS Pillay and KKM advisory panel chairman Nistar Sahul Hamid.

They were welcomed by village head Surip Abdullah, KSD Umno branch chairman Mohd Idris Omar and Pulai Kemas officer Mazni Wok.

The event started with a 30-minute aerobic exercise, followed by the 10,000-step walk around the village.

After a short break, residents underwent medical screenings for body mass index, glucose level, cholesterol and blood pressure.

Dr Manoharan said many villagers did not go for regular medical check-ups due to lack of awareness.

“Medical problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems are common among the residents.

“I can say that almost six out every 10 residents here require serious medical assistance,” he said.

The health talks were delivered by KKM officers Dr Norliana Ismail and Zaid Ramlan while the cooking demonstrations were conducted by staff nurses Norsiah Mohamad and Noraniza Md Nor.

A resident who wished to be known only as Azizah, said she had enjoyed the food prepared by the nurses, including the Bubur Harmoni.

“They were delicious and nutritious,” she said.

There was an exhibition on the role of the police force organised by the Johor Baru district police headquarters.

There were also counters for Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia recipients to update their information and voters’ registration.

An elated Surip said: “I am thankful that the event was a success. Hopefully, we can organise a similar programme in the future.”
