Police officer dies after taking part in oath taking ceremony

GEORGETOWN: An officer attached with the Serious Crimes Investigations Department (D9) at the Penang police contingent headquarters died from a suspected heart attack after taking part in an oath recital ceremony organised by the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) here earlier today (Jan 8).

Inspector R Kunes Raw, 35, is said to have been found sprawled in the toilet after the function before he was rushed to hospital where it was confirmed that he had died.

When contacted, Penang state police chief, Datuk Khaw Kok Chin, confirmed that the incident took place, apart from saying that Kunes was a hardworking and dedicated officer.

"Kunes' passing is a huge loss for the Penang police force.

"Kunes leaves behind a wife and two daughters and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family," he said.

Earlier, Khaw together with deputy state police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad and state Criminal Investigations Department (CID) head, Senior Assistant Commissioner Rahimi Ra'ais visited Kunes' family and next-of-kin at Hospital Pulau Pinang (HPP).

The visit was also a welfare one as a sign of police compassion and concern towards its officers and personnel apart from giving moral support to the family so as to ensure that the welfare aspect is prioritised and given due attention.

Meanwhile the Penang Police Facebook page was filled with condolence messages for Kunes' bereaved family.
