Pupils win second place in robotic competition

GEORGE TOWN: The SJK (C) Perempuan China, Penang emerged as the first runner-up in the World Robotic Olympiad 2014 (WRO) held in Sochi, Russia, last month.

The team comprising H’ng Ee Heng, 12, Lim Hee Lai, 11, and Ooi Zi Chuen, 10, earlier won the National Robotics Competition 2014 in October.

The WRO competition was aimed at developing and strengthening students’ critical thinking skills, namely, problem solving, creative thinking, interpersonal communication and teamwork.

There were five rounds in the WRO competition. During the tournament, the Malaysian team called Pearl Of The Orient had to assemble their robot from Lego Mindstorms Education Sets.

The robot was programmed and tested by the competitors in the playing field. Marks were given for each mission completed by the robot.

The robot’s missions were to assemble rocket elements in the assembly area, place the rocket elements vertically over the ram in the launch area and evacuate all civilians to the safety zone.

During Rounds 1 to 3, the Malaysians team got full marks (105) in 51 seconds to qualify for the finals.

The Indonesian team was declared winners after scoring full marks in 33 seconds, as opposed to Malaysia’s team in 45 seconds.
