Financial and other aid for flood victims

KUALA KANGSAR: THE government will continue to assist all flood victims in affected states until life returns to normalcy for them.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the assistance included financial aid and helping the victims to clean up their houses.

“We will line up measures to help them in clean-up operations after they move out from flood relief centres.

“In the final phase, we will determine the financial aid to be given to them to lessen their burden,” he said after visiting flood victims at SK Sayong here yesterday.

Najib, who was accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, said the government would also assist victims whose houses were damaged, especially those in Manek Urai, Kelantan.

“I will visit Kuala Krai and Gua Musang in Kelantan (today) to assess the extent of the damage before we decide how we can help them. Under the circumstances, they are sure to face a bleak future. As such, they are in need of government assistance.”

Najib said basic infrastructure and government assets destroyed in the floods would be repaired.

The authorities, he said, had yet to determine the losses suffered.

Najib said rumour-mongering on the flood situation on social media was an irresponsible act.

“Such acts can cause worry, especially to flood victims. The unverified information can also confuse people.

“I hope the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will track down the rumour-mongers and take action against them,” he said.

On Perak, Najib said he was satisfied with the assistance rendered to the 7,953 victims.

“There is ample food and other basic necessities.

“This is the best we can do for them now. I also notice good rapport between the state government and federal agencies,” he said, adding that members of parliament, assemblymen and politicians were on hand to assist the flood victims.

Najib, who arrived at Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh at noon yesterday, was immediately whisked to visit flood relief centres in Perak Tengah and Kuala Kangsar.
