Floods: 4,200 Felda settlers affected

DUNGUN: Felda has identified 4,200 settlers from 949 families in 12 settlements who were affected by the floods.

Its chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad said Felda Chiku in Gua Musang, Kelantan was the worst affected settlement.

"Deforestation in areas surrounding the settlement allowed rain water to flow swiftly into the settlement up to three metres high in a very short period.

"The settlers had no time to save anything and had to seek higher grounds before help came," he said after presenting donations to settlers at Felda Semaring in Hulu Dungun who were also affected by the recent flood.

Mohd Isa said Felda had distributed RM475,500 to all the affected families and had also identified 11 houses at Felda Neram in Kemaman that was damaged by landslides and needed repairs.

"The Public Works Department Institute (IKRAM) will conduct soil tests and strengthen the slope. "We cannot relocate the mudslide victims because the cost of rebuilding their houses would be too high.

"We will find a long term solution to their problems," he added.
