Kedah gets public holiday for Thaipusam

ALOR STAR: Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir today announced that Feb 3 would be made a public holiday in Kedah, in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration.

This is the second year in a row the Barisan Nasional state government granted an occasional holiday for Thaipusam, which was part of its manifesto during the 13th General Election campaign.

"We hope that this announcement will bring cheers to the Indian community who are celebrating Thaipusam next month," he said in a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Darulaman today.

Mukhriz also expressed his wish that the private sector in the state would observe the public holiday.

"That is the reason we decided to make an early announcement so that the private sector will get an ample time to make arrangement for the public holiday," he said.
