Vivekananda Ashram is now a heritage site

KUALA LUMPUR: Historical Vivekananda Ashram building will now be gazetted into a heritage site, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib announced today.

MIC National Youth Leader Sivarraajh Chandran, said it was good news that the mayor announced that the ashram will finally be declared as a heritage site.

He said it was a victory for Malaysians who had organised immediate protest once they learned that the 100-year old ashram is to be redeveloped.

“Today they tasted sweet victory with the announcement by City Hall that the Ashram site would be preserved as a heritage.

“Now the Ashram will continue to be a centre of peace and tranquillity,” he said, adding that the people had organised campaigns, written petitions and signing campaigns for the cause.

Sivarraajh said Ahmad Phesal told reporters that he had been informed by the National Heritage Department that they had considered declaring the ashram as a heritage building.

Ahmad Phesal in November last year said City Hall was still considering the application by the ashram’s board of trustee to develop the heritage site.
