Sarawak on flood alert

KUCHING: Several low laying areas are flooded following continuous rain since Saturday morning.

Fire and Rescue Department reports water level at Kampung Sindang, Desa Ilmu, Samarindah and Kampung Tuang in Kota Samarahan including areas surrounding Kampung Duranda Emas and Kampung Gundah have risen close to one metre.

Department spokesperson said several families are advised to relocate to the nearby relief centres as water is expected to rise further due to the continuing rain.

"Though the situation is not destructive, but the water level in some areas is enough to cut off road access to these people," he said.

Drainage and Irrigation Department Telemetry Station reports Sungai Sarawak have swollen to 3.61 metre at 6.50am.

This is 1.76 metre above its normal level of 1.85metre.

Meanwhile, 13 families from Rumah Maleng in Balingian had to be relocated on Saturday evening due to the flood.

The water level returned to normal at 10pm and Fire and Rescue Department advice the villagers to be vigilant at all times.
