National Paralympian dies in accident

KUALA LUMPUR: A triple gold medalist Paralympian sprinter Mohammad Azlan Mat Lazin, 25, died in a road accident in Jalan Serdang Raya this afternoon.

The Terengganu-born athlete was believed to have died on the spot due to serious head injuries and a broken right arm.

It is learnt that in the 1.45pm accident, Mohammad Azlan had come out from a junction on his Yamaha 125Z motorcycle before taking to the right side of a road heading towards Bukit Jalil.

“He was believed to have lost control of his motorcycle when a Toyota Hiace grazed his machine.

The impact of the crash caused him to be thrown off from his bike before he landed on the pavement. His motorcycle fell into a monsoon drain,” said a source.

"The 43-year-old Toyota Hiace driver has been detained to assist in investigations," he said.

Mohammad Azlan, won three gold medals in athletics in the men’s 100m T38, 200m T36 and 400m T36 events during the Asian Paralympic Games in Incheon, South Korea, October last year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Mohammad Azlan’s family.

"My condolences to the family of Mohd Azlan Mat Lazim, who made Malaysia proud in the 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games by winning three gold medals. Al-Fatihah," Najib said via his Facebook and Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin relayed the bad news and conveyed his heartfelt condolence in his Tweeter account @Khairykj.
