Tengku Ampuan Besar Intan Zaharah passes away

KUALA TERENGGANU: Tengku Ampuan Besar Intan Zaharah, the 4th Raja Permaisuri Agong, passed away due to pneumonia at the Pantai Hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 3.30pm today.

She was 87 years old. Her remains would be flown in to Kuala Terengganu at 10am tomorrow and would be laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum at the Abidin Mosque (Masjid Putih) next to her late husband Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin grave tomorrow.

Members of the public can pay their last respects at Istana Maziah from 11am until noon, while for VIPs, it will be from noon until 1pm.

Tengku Ampuan, born 13 April 1928, was married to Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah in Kuala Terengganu on April 3 1944 and was crowned Tengku Ampuan Besar of Terengganu at Istana Maziah on 6 June 1949.

She became the Raja Permaisuri Agong from 1965 until 1970.

Tengku Ampuan Besar Intan Zaharah was the grandmother of Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, the Sultan of Terengganu.

She was well liked and respected by her subjects because of her leadership and involvement in many non-governmental organisations.
