Terengganu down Selangor in Super League opener

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu began the Super League season on a high after beating Selangor 2-0 in Kuala Terengganu yesterday as Kelantan, LionsXII and Perak also scored convincing wins.

Kelantan, playing with 10 men for the last 40 minutes, overcame Armed Forces 2-0 in Paroi while Perak defeated Sime Darby by the same score in Ipoh.

Sarawak snatched a point with a late equaliser in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Felda United in Selayang while it rained goals in Singapore in the early kick-off when LionsXII led 5-0 by the 65th minute but then were forced to hang on for a 5-3 win against Police.

Terengganu's Ismail Faruqi Ashari volleyed in from just inside the box in the 38th minute before Gustavo Lopez curled in a free-kick in the 73rd minute to leave Selangor ruing letting last year's top-scorer Paulo Rangel leave them for Terengganu.

Noor Hazrul Mustafa and Erwin Carillo scored either side of half-time for Kelantan, who played the last 40 minutes with 10 men after Brendan Gan was carried off injured and with coach George Boateng having used his three substitutions.

Dramane Traore scored a debut hat-trick for newly-promoted Police but it came in vain as LionsXII roared into a 5-0 lead while Nurridzuan Abu Hassan and Namkoong Woong were on target for Perak against Sime Darby.

Last week, Super League champions Johor Darul Ta'zim defeated Pahang 2-0 to open the season in the Charity Shield match.
