KUCHING: Shortly after his arrival, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak went straight to work and meet with the locals during his walkabout programme in Kampung Gersik here today.

Najib, accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and Tourism Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg, rode the Sarawak's iconic "penambang" boat from Kuching Waterfront to visit Kampung Gersik.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, together with some 1,000 villagers gathered at the jetty to welcome the prime minister.

Kampung Gersik, famous for its Kek Lapis (layered cake) is about 15-mins drive from the city which can be reached either by land or by taking the river taxi.

A villager Masni Ahmad, 66, described the village as the birth place of the Kek Lapis where people come from near and far to buy the layer cakes from the Kek Lapis makers in the village.

"Not only that tourists come here to buy our cakes, the locals too, especially during festive seasons like the Chinese New Year celebrations," she said.

"When people mentioned about Kampung Gersik, they surely think about Kek Lapis," she added.
