UPDATED: Malaysia has the best health system, says Najib

SRI AMAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak believes Malaysia has the best health system based on its cost and service to the people.

The government subsidise up to 98 percent of the cost for patients who pays RM1 for general medical consultations and RM5 to see specialists, he said.

"To me if it is based on cost benefit analysis, our health system is the best in the world," he said adding the International Living 2014 Global Index ranked Malaysia third among 24 countries in health service.

Najib said this after laying the foundation stone for the Sri Aman Minor Specialist Hospital which will cost about RM150 million here.

The new hospital which is expected to be completed in 2018 will have 108 beds and specialist service for the district where its present hospital was built in 1959.

Najib was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, Health minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam, Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof and Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas.

Najib said he made the promise to build a new hospital for the district in his visit in 2011.

The prime minister who arrived last night for a two-day visit in the state will head to Beladin for a walkabout and Pusa where he will be performing Friday prayers.
