3 killed on the spot, 1 seriously injured in car crash

BATU PAHAT: Three people were killed while another was seriously injured when a car crashed into the rear of a lorry in an accident at KM91 of the North South expressway near Ayer Hitam here today.

In the 4.48pm accident, G. Nadarajan, 71, was killed while N. Mohanadas, 42, was seriously injured.

The identities of the other two victims who died on the spot, a man and a woman who were believed to be in their 60s have yet to be ascertained as of press time.

It is understood the victims were headed south to Johor Baru when the accident happened.

Batu Pahat deputy police chief Superintendent Mat Razali Awang said the accident occurred when the car that the victims were traveling in, a BMW, skidded to the left and collided with the rear of the lorry, which had stopped on the emergency lane.

"The collision caused the victims to be pinned inside the car. Three of the victims died on the spot while the driver of the car was seriously injured," said Razali, adding that the driver of the lorry escaped unhurt.

He said Mohanadas have been taken to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital, here for treatment. The bodies of the other three victims have also been taken to the same hospital for post-mortem.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987," said Razali.
