High level of Manganese, Ammonia forces closure of Sg Semenyih water treatment plant

SHAH ALAM: The Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant has been shut down at 5.15pm due to high level of Manganese and Ammonia in Sungai Semenyih.

Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-Based Industry Committee chairman, Zaidy Abdul Talib said the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) was notified about the increase in Manganese and Ammonia parameters and decrease of the river's pH level by Konsortium Aliran Bekalan Air Selangor Selatan (ABASS) at 3.15pm today.

The pH for raw water was 5.65 while the Ammonia and Manganese levels recorded a reading of 1.60 ppm and 1.51 ppm respectively.

Zaidy said following the notification, the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant had reduced the pumping of raw water from 682 million litres per day (MLD) to 409 MLD and stopped operation at 5.15pm.

"The state government, with the assistance from the water source contamination team led by LUAS and ABASS are conducting immediate investigation to identify the source of contamination.

"We will not compromise and will take strict action against those who cause this contamination," he said in a statement.
