Cop killed in early morning crash

GEORGE TOWN: A 31-year-old policeman riding a motorcycle was killed in an accident with a van early today.

B.Sukumaran, who was on duty, succumbed to his injuries after he was warded at the Balik Pulau Hospital, near here.

The 6.30am incident occurred at a busy stretch of road at Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas.

Southwest district police chief Superintendant Lai Fah Hin said Sukumaran was based in the Bayan Lepas police station, with a ranking of lance corporal, and was on his way to Sungai Ara from Relau.

"The van was travelling from the opposite direction and it collided with the motorcycle.

"The motorcyclist was thrown off the machine and he sustained serious bodily injuries, including injuries to his head, stomach and internal damage to his bladder. He also fractured his right leg," Lai said.

Lai said the case has been classified as a dangerous and reckless driving, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He further stated that the driver would be brought in for questioning.

The body was sent for a post-mortem and the body would be brought back to Malacca. Sukumaran was single.
