Malaysian ranks 2nd in the world to win ACCA Silver Medal Award

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the release of the ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) December 2014 exam results last month, it was announced that 23-year-old Johnny Ho Chan Wee has achieved second place ranking in the world for his performance in the ACCA exams to claim the Silver Medal Award.

This achievement also entitled him to be recognised as the Top ACCA Affiliate in Malaysia, an award that recognises ACCA students who scored the highest cumulative marks based on five professional level papers, successfully completed in a single sitting.

Thus, medals are awarded to those whose cumulative scores are the top three highest on a global level.

Ho was clearly elated when informed about his achievement, saying: “Receiving the Silver Medal is surreal, especially since I had initially only aimed for the Top ACCA Affiliate Award in Malaysia. This really makes all my efforts worthwhile; I am truly grateful to my lecturers at Sunway TES College for their constant encouragement and dedication to ensure we graduate with a wholesome knowledge of accountancy.”

Ho is no stranger to winning awards, having received the ACCA World Prize Winner Award for achieving the highest score in the world for his paper P1 (Governance, Risk and Ethics) in the June 2014 exam session.

Currently attached to the Assurance division of EY, a role he started just recently in January, he plans to build his expertise in professional accountancy consultation over the next three years as he works towards achieving ACCA membership.

Sharing the limelight is Kok Ser Lin who achieved the ACCA World Prize Winner Award for her paper F8 (Audit and Assurance) in the December 2014 exam session. If all goes according to plan, Kok will complete all her exams and graduate to ACCA affiliate status within the year.

According to David Chin, head of ACCA Malaysia, both Ho and Kok’s achievements are tremendous for them personally and also for the country. “Once again, our Malaysian students have proven their impressive capabilities, demonstrating how local talents can set global standards. My congratulations go out to them; this is truly a proud moment,” said Chin.

Ho is one of 8,282 people around the world who has successfully completed their final ACCA exams in the December 2014 session. A total of 186,519 students worldwide sat 316,420 papers and a further 55,194 took computer-based exams.

Pass rates in a number of critical areas improved, including some of the new style Skills level papers examined for the first time this session.

“ACCA is the leading global body for professional accountants, and employers rely on us to groom professional accountants who can contribute value to the organisation right off the bat. I am happy to see ACCA members in Malaysia are recognised by employers to have the right competencies to meet their requirements. We’re committed to continue this legacy for many more years to come,” shared Chin.

ACCA’s initiative to give students more flexibility continues with the introduction of four exam sessions a year beginning September 2015 in selected markets, of which Malaysia is included.--BERNAMA
