Kedah to set up emergency response hotline in case of landspouts tornado

JERLUN: Kedah government is mulling to set up a hotline number to enhance emergency response as it is bracing for formations of landspouts tornado.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said the hotline was one of the options being considered by the state government in enhancing its preparation for the landspouts threats.

"It is difficult for us to predict where the landspouts may strike as our authorities have yet to have the technology to defect its formation but we need to beef up our emergency response during the disaster and post-disaster relief effort," he said after opening the SMK Jerlun Parents-Teacher Association meeting here today.

Mukhriz was responding to the alarm raised by the Meteorological Department yesterday on the landspouts formation threats in the country, especially in northern states, Kedah and Perlis which could see tornado-like strong wind up to 120 km per hour.

In October and November last year, Kedah recorded at least four major landspouts formations in Pendang and Alor Star, damaging more than one hundred of properties.
