Teenager with Down Syndrome drowns in Chikus canal

TELUK INTAN: A Down Syndrome teenager was found drown inside the Chikus canal here this afternoon.

Eleven-year-old Mohamad Ashraf Jefri's remains were found by the search team about 3.55pm.

Operations chief Radzuan Mohd Nor said the victim's body was found some 5km away from where he was reported missing yesterday.

"The victim's remains were then handed over to the police for further action," he said, adding that more than 60 people were involved in the search for the victim.

Ashraf was feared drowned after he was believed to have fell into Sungai Chikus yesterday.

He was discovered missing from home when his shirt, shoes and bicycle were found by the river bank.

According to his mother, Rosni Awang Kechik, 48, the boy left home without anyone's knowledge.

At that time, she was in the kitchen while her husband was away at the oil palm plantation.

"I was shocked when my neighbour came running to me, telling me that my son's belongings were found by the river bank, about 500m from home.

"I rushed to the scene and was overcome with grief when I saw his things," she said.

A search for the boy was immediately mooted but was halted when the skies became dark.

The search resumed this morning.
