More than RM500mil allocated for welfare assistance in Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of RM589,230,947 were allocated for welfare aids in Selangor between 2008 and last year, Parliament was told.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said RM27 million was allocated in 2008, RM44 mil for 2009, RM85 mil for 2010, RM72 mil for 2011, RM122 mil for 2012, RM126 mil for 2013 and RM110 mil for 2014 (until September).

"The ministry, through the Welfare Department prepares financial aids for the underprivileged, namely children, senior citizens, single mothers and the disabled.

"The monthly financial assistance schemes are for children, elderly, allowance for the disabled, chronic illness/bedridden disabled persons, unemployment disabled persons, general aids and apprentice training scheme."

She said the recipients for 2008 involved 13,559 cases; 22,303 for 2009, 37,174 for 2010; 38,173 for 2011; 48,209 for 2012; 41,297 for 2013 and 40,752 for 2014 until September.

"A total 241,467 cases were recorded between 2008 and September 2014. Out of the total, 110,924 of the recipients were Malays, 84,865 were Indians and 44,391 were Chinese.

“As for Bumiputera recipients, 952 of them were from Peninsula, 112 from Sarawak, 99 from Sabah while 124 from other categories," she said in responding to a question by Wong Chen (PKR- Kelana Jaya).
