GEORGE TOWN: Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas today received the declaration letter signed by Yang di-Pertuan Agung Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah today to declare Penang island a city status.
He received the letter from Urban Well Being, Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Arpah Abdul Razak at his official residence in Sri Mutiara here.
In a ceremony held at Anjung Mutiara, Datuk Patahiyah Ismail also received her appointment letter from the state government to become the first mayor of Penang Island City Council with effect from Jan 1, 2015.
