Lam Thye: Exempt welfare, charitable foundations from GST

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye today appeals to the Customs Department to exempt welfare and charitable foundations from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) which will be implemented tomorrow.

Lee said the MCPF received a letter from the department last month stating that it would have to pay GST if the amount raised was more than half a million.

Lee urged the government to consider giving charitable foundations an exemption as it would make it more challenging for all non-governmental organisations to raise money to help the underprivileged if they were subject to GST.

Lee said this at a press conference after handing over 200 sets of desks and chairs to Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Foon Yew 1, here on behalf of the Eco World Foundation, where Lee is the chairman.
