Cops acted within the law with arrest of TMI employees: Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The police acted within the law and their jurisdiction in the arrest of five of The Malaysian Insider employees, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking to reporters after the Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCare) launch here today, Zahid said he had given his full confidence in the authorities to conduct the interrogations and said the arrest was not politically motivated.

“In the ministry, there are no political directives in any police arrest. I have empowered all heads of departments in the ministry, including the Inspector-General of Police.

“I am confident that the action taken is based on the law and is within their jurisdiction.”

Zahid said the police had the responsibility of interpreting the law and they have done so according to the standard operating procedures.

The arrest for investigation was following a report on March 25, claiming Conference of Rulers was against the implementation of hudud in Malaysia.
