Permatang Pauh by-election: Dr Abdullah Zawawi having another go as an independent candidate

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Medical practitioner Dr Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin, the independent candidate who lost his deposit in a three-corner fight for the Permatang Pauh seat in the 13th General Election, is having another go for the post.

The 47-year-old father of four said he would continue to promote the spirit of unity and justice among Malaysians regardless of their race and religion.

"I am offering myself again to represent the people of Permatang Pauh in carrying their voice to the Parliament.

"The people in this constituency need someone who could represent them without being tie down to any political party or being the puppet of certain people," he said in a press conference outside his private clinic in Bandar Perda here today.

In the March 2013 general election, PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defended his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat with a majority of 11,721 votes after polling 37,090 votes against BN's Dr Mazlan Ismail's 25,369 while Dr Abdullah only garnered 201 votes.

Dr Abdullah stressed that he was not sponsored by any political party but said he would pull out from the race should Pas decided to contest in the by-election or any independent candidate willing to fight for his 11-point manifesto cause.

The Permatang Pauh seat fell vacant after Anwar lost his eligibility as Member of Parliament when the Pardons Board rejected his appeal against his five-year jail sentence for sodomy.

The Election Commission has fixed Saturday as nomination day while the polling day for the by-election falls on May 7.
