Permatang Pauh by-election will see a four-corner fight

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Permatang Pauh by-election will see a four-corner fight between Barisan Nasional, PKR and two independents.

The announcement was made by returning officer Jusni Ismail when nomination closed at 10am.

BN will be represented by Permatang Pauh Umno secretary Suhaimi Sabudin, 44, while PKR by its president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The independent candidate are training consultant Salleh Isahak, 53.

Meanwhile Azman Shah Othman,50, will contest under the Parti Rakyat Malaysia banner, not Independent as previously reported.

A third independent candidate, medical practitioner Dr Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin, who voiced his intention to contest earlier, changed his mind at the eleventh hour.

The Permatang Pauh by-election was called after incumbent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was disqualified as a member of parliament after the Pardons Board rejected a petition for a royal pardon sought by the opposition leader's family over his sodomy conviction.

Polling has been fixed for May 7.
