River pollution still an issue at Nusajaya

NUSAJAYA: Large amounts of rubbish is a recurring problem in areas along Sungai Skudai, near here, which has been known for its pollution.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the deplorable condition was among the challenges that have affected the river's rehabilitation process which was launched more than two years ago.

"A visit to the Sungai Skudai information centre on March 19 together with the committee members under the Sungai Skudai Water Blueprint found there was too much rubbish along the river, damages on its embankment and squatters along the riverbank," Ayub told the state assembly here today.

He said the recurring problems have led to a restructuring of the committee that is in charge of the Sungai Skudai Water Blueprint launched in Dec 15, 2012. The blueprint's committee has now set up three sub-committees to be in charge of river beautification; river pollution; education and public awareness.
