Dr Mahathir, 98, is back at work and will continue giving opinions on the country's direction

KOTA KINABALU: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir has returned to work, according to his son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir, who is 98 years old, was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in February for treatment of an infection but later discharged.

"He is fine. He has gone back to work. He does not want to stay away from his work for very long.

"In July, he will turn 99. One might expect to consider retirement in their 90s, but even in their 60s, the thought may arise.

"Traditionally, retirement age is around 55. But his fighting spirit is still strong. He will continue at his current pace, remaining active and offering his opinions on the country's direction and how we can best move forward," said the Pejuang president after the party's Raya open house at a hotel here.

Present at the celebration were Sabah Pejuang chairman Nicholas Sylvester and his deputy Razif Abdillah.

Earlier, Mukhriz stated that Pejuang would consider collaborating with political parties, including those in the government, to contribute to the wellbeing of the people.

The two-time Kedah Menteri Besar said Pejuang - having learned lessons from its past election defeats, understands its position and would not simply demand seats in the upcoming elections.

Regarding party membership in Sabah, he added that the emphasis was not so much on the quantity but on the quality of members who would remain loyal to the party through thick and thin.
