Business owners question signboard size ruling

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCCI) said business owners here were questioning a new ruling by the local council to limit the size of signs placed on the facade of shop lots.

JBCCCI president Datuk Loh Liam Hiang said he had been informed by advertising trade associations that the ruling to only allow signboards measuring 20m in width and 4m in height was unsuitable for multi-storey business premises.

“The Johor Baru City Council will be standardising the signboard size for it to be 20m by 4m.

“Shopowners spend up to RM30,000 for such billboards,” said Loh after a meeting with pro-tem committee members of the newly set up Sultanah Fatimah Foundation in Kota Iskandar, Nusajaya.

Loh said the JBCCCI will meet with advertising companies and business to discuss their concerns before sending an appeal to the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB).

The MBJB had announced last month that the local council was standardising the size of billboards on shop lots.

Johor Baru mayor Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamed Dewam had said the requirement was for safety reasons, as it did not want any structures or billboards to cover the entire facade of the buildings.

The move would also ensure that there is no obstruction in case of fire.
