June 8 for mention of Anwar voting suit

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court fixed June 8 for further case management of former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suit against the Election Commission (EC) and two others for barring him from voting in the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Assistant registrar Nor Hasniah Ab Razak set the date to allow the three defendants to file their affidavits.

Federal counsel M. Kogilambigai confirmed - who appeared for defendants the EC, its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, and the government during today's case management - confirmed the outcome.

The former Permatang Pauh member of parliament filed the suit on May 6, claiming Aziz had given media statements on April 27 and 29 that he was disqualified from voting in the Permatang Pauh by-election.

The former opposition leader alleged Aziz explained the barring was due to his (Anwar) jail sentence for sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.

Aziz had stated to online portal Malaysiakini that a prisoner was not qualified to vote if he (Anwar) was serving a jail sentence as per Article 119(3)(a) of the Federal Constitution.
