SHOWBIZ: A gentle roar

Taiwanese singer Tiger Huang Xiao Hu promises another spectacular show here this Friday, writes Loong Wai Ting

DEEP, husky vocals are her trademark and Taiwanese singer Tiger Huang Xiao Hu is no stranger to local fans of Mandopop music.

Since her performance at Arena Of Stars, Genting Highlands, late last year, fans here can’t seem to get enough of her. Returning again to Genting International Convention Centre (GICC) in First World Hotel on Friday at 8.30pm, she is expected to give another spectacular show.

With a musical-themed stage setting, the concert will be a one-of-a-kind performance. Her guest performer is none other than Lai Ming Wei, a participant of talent search show One Million Star.

“Younger fans know me through recent hits such as It’s Not That Simple, Lover and Chong Lai. But there are more popular hits from yesteryears that I’d like them to know as well. These were equally popular when they were released in the 1990s,” she says.

Currently working on a new album, Huang promises that the concert will be a treat. “I want to take the audience down memory lane, to when I first started out. At that time, no one knew who Tiger Huang was,” she says.

Although she had incorporated dance moves in her previous performance, there would be none this time.

“I will focus on singing. I’m sure fans who come for the concert only want to see me sing, not dance,” she says.

Since 2007, the singer who is known for her sharp tongue, has been making regular appearances on Taiwanese singing competition, One Million Star, attracting a new league of younger fans.

While many of them know Huang better as the “fiery judge” on the show, she has come a long way in making her mark in the Chinese music industry.

It was only in 1982 that an opportunity to perform at a pub changed her career forever. For more than two decades, performing in Taiwan’s live music scene earned her the nickname, Queen Of Pubs.

She made her first international debut with the classic Mandarin ballad, More Than Friends, written by her friend and fellow performer, Sky Wu.

Huang enjoys tremendous success as a singer and her fan base extend to every Mandarin-speaking region including Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. (She performed in the US for the first time in 2008)

Between 1993 and 1994, Huang released three English studio albums — The Rose, Over The Rainbow and All By Myself — which won her new fans from the non-Chinese speaking market. With a dozen albums under her belt, Huang enjoyed renewed success with the release of The Voice series albums, which highlighted her live concert performances.

In 2008, she embarked on a concert tour around Taiwan and tickets were sold-out within hours. Last year, she released a new album, Hard To Put Down.

Tickets to the Tiger Huang Live In Genting concert are priced between RM80 and RM690. Genting Rewards members get 20 per cent early bird discount (limited to the first 500 tickets for PS3 seating). There is also a 10 per cent discount for Genting Rewards members. Call 03-2718 1118 or visit www.rwgenting.com
