PAC wants the truth, says Nur Jazlan

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has made it clear to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) officials today that the committee want to hear the truth during their hearing with chief executive officer (CEO) Arul Kanda Kandasamy and former CEO Datuk Shahrol Halmi.

Its chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the committee members want those summoned before the PAC to come with “good intentions” and to explain their side of the story.

“If there is any proof that they deceived us, PAC will not be sympathetic towards them,” he said at a news conference after chairing a committee meeting.

“We are not (sympathetic) in the first place, and if we come to know they deceived us, the questioning will be more aggressive,” he said.

Arul and Shahrul were supposed to attend a hearing with PAC on Tuesday but had to postpone the hearing after both men informed the committee that they were overseas to attend to some work.

When asked that they were allegations both of them were in the country, Nur Jazlan today said he has heard on the allegations. “Here’s the problem with the 1MDB thing. Everybody has listened to so many allegations, innuendos and such and we don’t know whether they are true or false,” he added.

“And there’s a tendency to declare some people are guilty... when they come, then we ask them, whether it’s true or false that they’re not in the country at the time they were supposed to see us.

“But our focus is on answers during their time as CEOs in the company,” he said.

Aside from the PAC, the Auditor-General is also conducting an audit on the accounts of 1MDB. PAC had announced yesterday they will be meeting with two international auditors, Deloitte on June 10 and followed by KPMG on June 17.
