Singapore probes match-fixing at SEA Games

SINGAPORE: Singaporean officials said today they had arrested an alleged match-fixer as well as several co-conspirators following an investigation into football matches at the Southeast Asian Games.

Singapore’s Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) did not name the people who were arrested but said they came from several nationalities.

“The authorities added that some members from the Timor Leste SEA Games football team are also assisting them in investigations,” the CPIB said in a statement.

The CPIB said the arrests were made following an investigation into match-fixing activities relating to the 28th Southeast Asian Games, which kicked off in Singapore today.

“The arrests were conducted during an operation that began late in the evening on Thursday and lasted through the morning, CPIB said in a press release,” the statement said.

A CPIB spokesperson told Reuters that the bureau could not comment further because the case was under investigation.--REUTERS
