Abdul Hadi retains Pas presidency

KUALA SELANGOR: Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang retained his post after defeating his challenger, veteran Pas leader Ahmad Awang, at the party polls last night.

Hadi polled 928 votes against Ahmad, who received 233, landing the former with a vote majority of 695.

The victory had once again proved the ulama faction's authority in Pas. This was the first time that Hadi had been challenged for the seat, ever since he helmed the party 12 years ago.

Pas election chairman Asmuni Awi announced the results at 10.18pm, however as of Press time the results for other posts including deputy presidency, vice-presidency and central committee members has not been announced.

The result was greeted by shouts of 'takbir' by delegates.

"A total of 1162 ballot papers were given out. Only one was not returned and there were no spoilt vote," said Asmuni.
